External Sailing Opportunity - SYC J70 Program

Sandringham Yacht Club’s J/70 program is back again for this summer and it’s a seriously good opportunity for sailors looking to get into high level keelboat racing.

The program has multiple pathways depending on experience level:

- Development Program

Designed for sailors with dinghy experience who are newer to keelboats. It focuses on keelboat handling, fleet racing, tactics, crew roles, and building confidence on J/70s. Perfect for people transitioning out of youth classes or wanting to move into bigger boats.

- Advanced Program

Designed for sailors with previous J/70 or keelboat racing experience. This is a high performance pathway focused on state and national level competition, advanced tactics, team dynamics, fleet racing, and regatta preparation.

The advanced squad also gets access to major regattas including Victorian and NSW State Titles, Sail Sandy, the J/70 Spring Regatta, and Australian Nationals. A massive benefit of the program is that SYC subsidises travel and regatta costs for advanced sailors, including flights, accommodation, entry fees, and other travel expenses for selected events.

Being an SYC member also gives sailors access to exclusive J/70 fleet racing and match racing regattas run by the club throughout the year.

Both programs include coaching sessions, structured training, access to club-owned J/70s, and opportunities to race against some very strong competition. It’s also become a really good pathway into larger keelboat programs and national level racing.

We’re not associated with SYC or the program directly, but a lot of RMIT Sailing sailors have gone through it over the last few years and have genuinely really enjoyed it. You will also need to be a SYC member to have access to the program.
